in a nutshell
Many people’s idea of Australia begins and ends on the beach. Arguably, that’s quite a compliment: we rightly think of Australians as relaxed, friendly people living in a place blessed with both good weather and natural beauty. But Oz has depth, too – and nowhere more so than Sydney. There’s a vibrant art scene, which includes contemporary work from across Asia. Some of the world’s best restaurants crowd the harbour – but watch out, the resident pelicans will be eager to share your supper. Then, of course, there’s the scalloped majesty of the Sydney Opera House: a rousing riposte to the notion that young countries lack culture.
